Bernardo Bertolucci, the man behind the 1972 drama, said in a 2013 interview he didn't tell Schneider what was going to happen because he wanted her to react 'as a girl, not as an actress'. The clip resurfaced on Saturday, drawing outrage at the treatment of Schneider, who was 19 years old when the movie was taped.
She told the Daily Mail in 2007, four years before her death in Paris, that she had felt 'a little raped' after shooting the scene with Brando, who was 48.
'I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can't force someone to do something that isn't in the script, but at the time, I didn't know that,' Schneider said.
Bertolucci claimed during the 2013 interview that he and Brando came up with the idea of the scene, which involves butter.
'The sequence of the butter is an idea that I had with Marlon in the morning before shooting it,' Bertulocci said in the video, published on YouTube. But, he said, he was 'horrible' to Schneider when he didn't tell her about his plans.
'I wanted her reaction as a girl, not as an actress,' he added. 'And I think that she hated me and also Marlon because we didn't tell her.
