Mongolian prisoners in a box - 1913 - Stéphane Passet*

This photograph first appeared in National Geographic magazine in 1922. The woman in the box was sentenced to death. She will stay in this box until she dies of hunger or thirst.

The bowls on the floor next to her were occasionally filled with water or food. This didn't save her life, it just delayed death. The box will be her coffin.

The photographer Stéphane Passet was commissioned by the Parisian millionaire Albert Kahn to photograph the cultural traditions and customs in every corner of the world.

One of these photographers was Stéphane Passet. He should document, not intervene. If he had freed the woman, it would have been a violation of one of the most important guidelines of anthropologists.

The authenticity of the photograph is undisputed. However, the alleged reason for the young woman's execution is considered doubtful. According to National Geographic, the woman was sentenced to starvation as punishment for adultery.

*This photograph is of course well known and is often attributed to Albert Kahn personally. However, that is wrong. The real photographer is Stéphane Passet, who only traveled to Mongolia on behalf of Albert Kahn.
